In September 1999, Becky Curboy was a single mother of four young children, and a recipient of TAFDC facing termination. It was then that she heard of CWE and contacted CWE's fledgling Central Massachusetts office. Becky soon enrolled in First Step FastTrac and became CWE Central Massachusetts' first official client.
"First Step FastTrac showed me the direction I needed to go in, but more importantly, it gave me the tools to get there," Becky said.
In April 2000, Becky launched her business, Royal Springs Family Golf Center, a golf driving range with a full pro shop, in Charlton, MA. In 2001, no longer receiving government assistance, Becky proudly filed an income tax return.
At a recent State House presentation, Becky said, "There is an old adage that says, 'You can give a man fish and feed him for a day, or teach him how to fish and feed him for a lifetime.' The welfare system hands out fish. CWE teaches how and where to fish."
Becky has stayed involved with CWE, and is now a participant in CWE Central Massachusetts' WNET program.
