The Woman Card: Building Women's Negotiating Skills and Confidence
Dr. Elizabeth Volpe, Associate Professor of Management, Roger Williams University
This workshop session will focus on women and negotiation. Much negotiation research highlights how women shy away from negotiating, or asking for what they want, in professional contexts. This can result in women being disadvantaged when compared to their male counterparts on issues such as salary, project assignments, and advancement opportunities. Negotiation research also suggests that when women do decide to negotiate, they are perceived and often treated differently than men. This workshop session will help attendees understand the challenges and biases women often face in negotiation situations. We will discuss how to identify negotiation opportunities in professional contexts, present strategies and techniques for conducting negotiations effectively and overcoming negotiation roadblocks, and allow for interaction among participants to help build confidence and experience as negotiators.
